What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy treats pain and injuries with exercise and can show you ways to manage your condition without medications or surgery. Physiotherapy focuses on maintaining your functional ability - being able to work, play and do your day-to-day activities with minimal pain or limitation.
Who is Physiotherapy for?
Physiotherapy is suitable for many types of illnesses and injuries. More common ailments include:
-
Sports injuries (torn ligaments/muscles, over-use injuries)
-
Trauma related injuries (fractures, torn muscles)
-
Post-operative rehabilitation (hip or knee replacements, shoulder reconstructions, back surgery)
-
Chronic pain (lower back pain, neck pain)
-
Osteoarthritis and other age-related problems (osteopenia, poor balance, deconditioning)
-
Weight management
-
High level sports performance
Physiotherapists are also excellent trainers for fitness orientated goals - the benefit of seeing a physiotherapist for your training is that you will have someone with a medical background overseeing your program. If you have a previous or current injury or medical condition, a physiotherapist can give you extra guidance to ensure you are safe while still achieving your fitness goals.
What can I expect from a Physiotherapy session?
In your first session, you will meet your physio and discuss what pain or injury you have, or what fitness goals you would like to achieve. They will ask questions to identify a diagnosis and may check your medical history to see if there may be any barriers or considerations for you. You will set goals with your therapist to set you on the right path and track your progress in the short and long term. Your physio will prescribe you rehabilitative exercises and give you advice on how best to manage your condition.
Follow up sessions will assess how you and your injury or condition are improving. You will likely review the exercises given to you, and progress them as you improve.
